Healthy Almond Milk Hot Cocoa Recipe

Just like gingerbread, ugly Christmas sweaters, and Love Actually on repeat on Netflix... hot cocoa is a staple during the holidays. I absolutely love holiday season but being surrounded by tons of holiday treats is so tough! There is so much sugar everywhere! I have to admit, sometimes I need A LOT of self control to restrain myself from indulging in ALL the treats. It’s definitely tough and I do believe in balance but I usually like to stay away from foods that do not benefit my body. At the end of the day, I love feeling healthy and it feels good to know that I made the best decision for my body regarding the food I consumed throughout the day. Don’t get me wrong, I love holiday treats as much as the next person, and hot cocoa is high on that list. Those who know me know that I always like to be as healthy as possible while still giving myself a little room for treats, specially during the holidays. With that being said, sometimes I like to take something unhealthy and put a spin on it to make it a little more healthy. I’m a big believer in indulging consciously. Lately, because of holiday season, I’ve come to crave hot cocoa. There’s just something so classic about hot cocoa on a cold night, whether it be spent cuddling on the couch watching a holiday movie, decorating the house and christmas tree, going out to see all the christmas lights, or spending the evening ice skating while christmas carols play in the background. Hot cocoa works in every one of those situations. The recipe for this hot cocoa cuts out dairy and refined sugar entirely. In it’s place, I’ve added unsweetened almond milk and raw agave but you could also use raw honey. It is so good that you won’t even miss the high processed stuff that comes in a packet. Here’s the recipe:

Healthy Hot Cocoa Recipe:

- 1 cup of almond milk
- stick of cinnamon
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon of raw agave or raw honey

Bring milk and cinnamon stick to a simmer in a small pot over medium heat. Gradually add unsweetened cocoa powder and stir until dissolved then add raw agave or raw honey while continuing to stir. Pour in a mug, garnish with cinnamon stick and enjoy.

This almond milk hot cocoa will instantly give you all the holiday feels while being a little more healthy than the original version. It’s something that I could drink every night during the holidays and feel like I’ve indulged but not feel guilty about it. I’d love to know if you try this recipe out!
